Mayor Greg Nickels has appointed a group of individuals to redevelop the Seattle Center over the next 20 years. The plans intention is to follow along the Center’s mission of being the “Nation’s Best Gathering Place.” The design will create more opportunities to gather people together. Although proposals will always be under revision, reports have a focus on reinventing the Center House, expanding open spaces for outdoor activities and creating for efficient modes of transportation.
“Seattle is taking action to prevent one of the biggest threats to the future our city and the planet – global warming. Through Seattle Climate Action Now, we are committed to leading by example and helping everyone in the city take steps today to reduce climate-changing pollution in their homes, at work and on the road.”

Plans for the new glass facade Center House also include upgraded retail, a rooftop view restaurant, multiple performance spaces, expanded Children’s Museum and Center High School and new Teen and Technology Center. Other proposed improvements include a lease with Seattle Opera and the Mercer Arena, restoration of the Broad Street Green entry (construction anticipated on the southwest portion of the Green in spring 2008), reduced rent for the Fun Forest (which is also planned to be replaced due to declining revenues) and a new skatepark to replace what was originally located at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation site.
All new designs are to be focused on:
- Flexibility – flexible, multipurpose indoor and outdoor spaces should be designed.
- Vibrancy – buildings, programs and landscaping should work together to create a sense of excitement and discovery.
- Legibility – design, signage and sight lines should work together to create a unified sense of place.
- Sustainability – planning and design should promote environmental sustainability.
